Several weeks ago, I went on a walking tour at the tail end of the annual City of Gold Festival in Johannesburg. Walking around Jeppestown, we were led by the incredible Jo from Past Experiences (who is an absolute wealth of knowledge about the area and the artists) and shown various works of graffiti art, some on broken down walls, others high up on buildings. I have a newfound appreciation for this art form; the graffiti artists are talented and dedicated, private, and proud of their work (as they rightly should be).
From the City of Gold Festival website:
The aim of City Of Gold is to establish Johannesburg as a destination for graffiti and street artists from around the world and assist the development of the local graffiti/street art community. In addition to this the festival seeks to highlight the positive aspects of this art form as well as involving the general public to create a heightened awareness and appreciation for it.
