Fruity Ideas

What I’ve been making lately with fruit:

Dried (dehydrated) oranges. Sprinkle sugar on the slices before sticking them in the oven for a few hours on a low temperature. It gives a little extra sweetness that makes them great to nibble on as a snack, or to add into a cup of tea for a little extra something. I’ve been enjoying these when I make a mug of rooibos and chai tea.
You can forgo the added sugar, and dry these to leave around the house for a light citrusy fragrance. Put them in a bowl or sachet with cinnamon sticks and cloves for a lovely, warm, spicy mix.

DIY orange candle:
Hollow out an orange half, being careful to leave the white stem (pith) intact, as this will act as the wick. Let it dry for just a bit, and then add vegetable oil into the hollowed out peel. Light your “wick” and enjoy your homemade candle!
Though I haven’t tried it, I’m sure you could add a drop of essential oil to make it more fragrant.

Lemons from my tia’s backyard, used to make lemon curd.

Goiabada, or guava paste, (similar to membrillo) is relatively easy to make. I’ve been obsessed with guavas ever since their intoxicating fragrance captured me at the grocery store here. They’re absolutely lovely to eat on their own, but I find the seeds to be a bit of a nuisance. So, instead, I’ve been making goiabada to enjoy with slices of cheese or some fresh bread.
Bonus: making goiabada fills your kitchen with a sweet, tropical smell.
